I was at a concert last night, and the vast majority of girls were wearing those. Not totally my style, but I think right now they’re really in. A friend of mine has them, and she looks great in them.

Woking Grange – Children’s Home Shoe Store

The Grange had its on clothing stores.
In our Children’s Home we had a similar store, you would be take in small groups to be fitted out when enough of you needed clothes replacing, some of the time you were allowed to make a choice of what you wanted to wear, but there was never much of a selection. Most of the clothes were purchased in bulk, so often it was either a choice of grey or blue if it was a school jumper or the like.
Play clothes were stored in a different part of the store, then there was more of a selection, Sister however decided on what you were going to wear, once you reached 11 years of age you might get a little more of a choice.
With wellingtons there was often either the choice, Dull or Bright finish, for most boys once you got to around eight, you would be expected to start to wear dull wellies to make you more grown up, a few of us always chose the Bright finish or Girls style boots as they allowed deeper puddles, slight teasing outside by some of our friends, but we were the ones that could go into deeper water, and there was less of a chore on coming indoors as the treads on our boots were smoother and did not get clogged with mud. Wellingtons had to be put away in clean condition, if you had the bright finish to wellingtons they passed Sisters inspection more easily.
If there was nothing in the clothing store at the Home of your size, you might get taken into town, there might be a slightly better choice, but you knew not to make a fuss in public, if Sister was choosing something you did not really like.
