Question–: Why do Muslim women dress like the virgin Mary?
Why are Western expatriates living in Muslim countries expected to idolise her too?

I thought idolatry was a big sin.

That is not idolatry, it is so that others do not commit adultery, but adultery is when one looks at a woman with lust for the man has already committed adultery in his heart.

They dont dress like that to idolize the virgin Mary, they do it to cover their bodies to avoid temptation and its part of their religious customs. Mary and Jesus are mentioned in the koran, in fact she is the only woman they identify by name, they just dont believe Jesus was their savior, just an immaculate child.

They cover there heads out of respect. Westerns living in Muslims countries should nott unless they can respect and understand why they live they way they do. The same as Muslims who live here. It is called respect. You don’t have to understand why someone does what they do, only that they have the right to do so. There is no wrong or right way to be.

They dress that way because the male clerics in their religion don’t realize it’s the 21st century and rather, insist women cover up no matter how unsightly, impractical or uncomfortably hot the shrouds are.

Muslims respect Mary a whole lot more than Protestant Christians do, and as much as Catholic Christians do. They are all following a style a dress that goes way, way, way back in time in that part of the world. It started long before Mary came along. Idolatry is a big sin. Muslims do not idolize anyone. The entire faith of Mohammad was based on casting down idols and worshipping the One True and Living God. The major difference between Islam and Christianity is that Christians believe Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, i.e., the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary, and Muslims believe Jesus was spoken into being by God, i.e., a prophet, born of the Virgin Mary.

Everyone dressed like that back then, the samaritan woman and the prostitute as an example..it is the dress of thousands of years ago…it is not dressing/covering to honor or anything…

it is a “look at me , I am modest and holier than you are”…

I guess time has stood still for some people..

Yes, wrong category, yadda yadda. Whenever I see a Muslim woman in the ninja outfit (I don’t know what it’s called) I always wonder if they think that I’m a huge w hore because I’m all exposed.
I also see a lot of Amish and Hasidic Jewish people, and I wonder the same thing about them.

I know! I live around a bunch of Amish people and although I’m relatively modest dresser I can’t help but wonder if I look whorish to them.

I’ve never asked any muslim women about this, but i have always thought that they probably think American women are completely over the line of propriety.

Edit: I also wonder if they realize how closely, we (USA) associate hiding your face to stick-ups?

I don’t know, but I had an experience in an airport once when I was traveling alone for business. A Muslim man with multiple wives was holding court in the waiting area. I was sitting nearby in jeans, boots and a leather jacket, with my laptop in my lap, listening to music and laughing at a stupid e-mail someone sent me.

I realized after a while that one of the young wives was staring at me, watching everything I did, taking in every detail of my clothes, and the look on her face was so intensely wistful, as if she wished she could have swapped places with me on the spot and have the type of freedom she saw I had.

I wonder the same thing when I walk by an Amish lady wearing stockings, dress and bonnet…and I’m wearing a camisole and shorts.

we had turkish muslims when i attended school (they wore the hijab) and most really didn’t give a damn. they were just regular girls. the grandmas were usually the ones to protest, but aren’t grandparents always doing that in some form any way?

I don’t know, but I’m a protestant and I’ve got a religious tattoo on my left foot and a muslim girl I knew told me that it’s disrespectful. She never mentioned how I dress (I’m a fairly top heavy girl and I like to show it off) and she never wore the traditional Islamic outfits. I did always feel judged by her, however, that is only one person out of thousands
