the egtved girl was 16-18 years old and around 160 cm tall. she had fair, rather short hair. she was buried on a summer’s day in 1370 BCE. a small yarrow flower was laid on the edge of the coffin before the lid was placed over it. only hair, teeth, nails, and a little skin remain. she wears a short blouse and a cord skirt that reached the knees (this picture shows a copy of her clothing). on her stomach lies a belt plate of bronze decorated with spirals. in the belt is a comb of horn. she has two arm rings of bronze. by her ear lies a thin ring, by her face a bark box with a bronze awl and the remains of a hair net. at the other end of the coffin stands a small bark bucket. in the bucket there was once a mixture of beer and wine made from wheat and crand=beryy sweetened with honey.
in a small cloth wrapping lie the cremated bones of a child who had reached the age of five or six. a few bones of the same child were found in the bark box. why did the egtved girl have a child with her in the grave – moreover a cremated child? it is unlikely to have been her own child. was it a human sacrifice or was it one of her siblings who died at the same time?
