Q&A–: How formal should our attire be?
US Marine retirement party at a nice hotel (ceremony, cocktails, dinner) beginning at 530pm.
Are we talking ‘little black dress’ and jacket/tie for attire?
Or dress pants/shirt/blouse (for men/women)?
Age= majority attending in their 30′s and 40′s (man retiring is 40)

Depending on the age group that’s going to be attending I would be wearing little black dress attire. If it’s going to be all 60+ then a nice blouse and what not would be good.

I suggest wearing something along the lines of what you called “little black dress” attire since the party will be held at a nice hotel. This retirement party consists of a ceremony, cocktails, and dinner as you have said, which sounds like a formal event.

Parties for servicemen etc are usually dressy and I would wear a dress if I was a woman and a suit if i was a guy. You can alwasy take off the jacket.

Always err on the side of being over-dressed. You will never feel uncomfortable in doing so. If you are under-dressed it can be embarrassing and there’s not fixing that once you have arrived at the party or event.

Question–: What does “Black Tie Welcome” mean for women’s attire for weddings?
I’m going with my boyfriend (who will be wearing a tuxedo as he is the Best Man (groom’s brother)) and the invite says “Black Tie Welcome.” Can I wear a classy floor-length dress or should I wear less-formal knee-length dress? I’m just not really sure what the “black tie welcome” suggests for female attire.

that would be floor-length ballroom dress, think bridesmaid dresses.

take a look at the attached website where they show an example of the perfect dress to wear for this occasion. There are also a list of dos and don’ts to be the perfect guest. The classy floor length dress would be the more appropriate choice to go with someone who is wearing a tux.
