Q&A: Any exercise tips or ideas for my daughter? Also some motivation tips would be good too!?
We live in the UK and my daughter who is 13 would like to do more exercise and get healthier but do it sensibly. We have tried swimming but it can’t be done every week and she is so choosy and is lacking motivation so some tips would help. Many Thanks x

Here are 5 things that might work :
1. Have her join a group aerobics class or a spinning class. Working out with a group will help her stay motivated as she makes more friends with her fellow mates.
2. If you have a dog, have her take the dog for a walk daily. You could bribe her with an ipod so she can listen to her music while she walks.
3. Buy a treadmill at home so she can walk or jog on it while watching tv or listening to music.
4. Buy her a Wii Fit or Wii Active or some workout dvds so she can watch them at home and workout on her own.
5. Start a family challenge and workout with her. Set a goal that you can both work together on.Make it fun and set up prizes for every 5 pounds lost for motivation.

For motivation, here’s a few tips:
1. Give her enough love that she won’t feel insecure if she doesn’t exercise. Someone who’s too insecure will sometimes just give up. Help her visualize the short- and long-term benefits.
2. Help her try out different things and make a plan for what she wants to do and how often. If you can afford it, dance, yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, or sports may be fun for her and be more of a commitment. Running, biking, swimming, stair-stepping, and other exercises can be done very cheaply.
3. Exercise with her. Be natural and have fun with it. That’ll make it more of a commitment and more fun for both of you.

Is there an exercise class she can join with other kids?
Here in the states they have the YMCA where kids all different ages can exercise together.
I have a friend, her child is a little overweight and is now going every week and loves it.
Or just exerise with her. Walk around the block together. Just walking is good exerise. Just don’t make a big deal about it.
You have to find something your daughter likes your she will not stick to it. It is easier when you do with a group too.
I used to work in a gym too!

Start running.. start with 1 mile.. The key is to run for at least 45 minutes. You can run slowly as long as you don’t stop for 45 mins. Start with 5 minutes… in 3 weeks you should be able to do 45 mins in 3-4 weeks
or at least start by walking..
45 minutes or more is the keyword..
